Risk assessment
of underwater cutting and demolition tasks shows that the safest and
cheapest method is for a professionally calculated charge to be
positioned and blown remotely. This technique is especially valid
when cutting piles and bridge supports. Instead of a costly crane
being employed for hours to support the weight whilst a diver
working in difficult and dangerous conditions cuts around the
circumference using up expensive oxygen and ultra-thermic cutting
rods, it can be cut from a safe distance with one charge. The amount
of explosives can be so small that fish are not killed and anyone
off site is unaware that a charge has gone off.
These techniques
can be used both above and below water.
